Looking at it another way
In an effort to cut down on clutter, cost and delays (yes
I'm impatient too while waiting for a favourite magazine's
next issue),
I get some of my overseas magazines in digital formats such
as Zinio.
If you've tried our online Electric versions you'll get the
idea. I think the Zinio reader is slicker but is flaky when
viewed on my older PC. If you're technically inclined, all
of them work on the idea that you've laid out the magazine
for printing, and can make a PDF from it. Online this gets
turned into a Flash page you can zoom in on.
See the sample at right. It's from a digital photography
magazine about the guy who photographed the last few Jamie
Oliver cookbooks, David Loftus. His food
photography is simple and attractive. You can only 'read' ie.
zoom in, on 3 pages in the sample but if you know how to
clear your cache and cookies you can see another three each
time.
Or buy a single issue and see how it works. I suggest
viewing it full screen (the button with the double arrows).
Now tell us if that kind of format is how you'd read a
magazine like Regional Food. It'd be a lot cheaper to give
you.

It looks like Zinio will
offer previews to promote their other digitally
formatted publications in the same way. Here's a link to
a Saveur sample on authentic Italian food from
Basilicata, and one from
Town & Country on Bordeaux. Fred Harden. 20
