Restorative
Tonic.
We keep up with the weekly newspaper food and wine sections
but scanning them with the first cup of coffee in hand can
sometimes be stressful. Trends, fads and stories we've
missed or already discovered are all part of keeping up with
it, but as we've dragged our heels to put out a new issue,
there's been a growing depression. I've stopped tolerating
silly stories, lousy layouts, bad food photos and food
articles that are just reprinted recipes. Bah humbug he
snorts!
Then along comes something that gives me reason to keep
going and not to compromise. The Age Good Food Guide issue
of Epicure is out ( the SMH one is next week)
and the reasons why we have chosen food as our source of
reading and writing pleasure are wonderfully restored.
The Age website (with it's new sparse Fairfax Digital look)
has all the details of hats won and lost and tossed
aside, (there's a new category that recognises places that
care and deliver but don't want to be fine dining
restaurants). One of the pleasures of reading Epicure
is always the writing of reviewer John Lethlean who co-edits
the Guide. Let's hope the Guide's success makes
Epicure immune from the Fairfax journo cuts. There's some
video of the awards night, but if you're heading to
Melbourne or travelling Victoria you need the 2009 Good Food
Guide. Buy one.
(In a truffle story in this Epicure issue they've also used
my photo of Wayne Haslam that's on the homepage of RF at the
moment)
